The Mystery of the Hope Diamond: From Bagan’s Temples to the Smithsonian

The Mystery of the Hope Diamond: From Bagan’s Temples to the Smithsonian

Is one of the world’s most beautiful gemstones also its most dangerous? The Hope Diamond is
legendary not just for its rare deep blue hue, but for a chilling history that has captivated the
world for centuries. Often mistaken for a sapphire, this spectacular mineral holds a story that
blends breathtaking natural beauty with a dark human legacy.
For us at Jewel Creations NY, this story is more than just a legend - it’s a connection to our
roots. Having produced and narrated this video, I wanted to explore the intersection of high
jewelry and the spiritual traditions of my homeland, Myanmar.
A Sacred (and Stolen) Origin
The mystery begins in the Ananda Temple in Bagan, Burma. Legend has it that the diamond
was originally embedded in the forehead of a Buddha image. It remained a sacred relic until it
was stolen by a French merchant who disguised himself as a monk to gain access to the temple's
treasures.
In Burmese culture, gems are deeply spiritual. As descendants of the Ruby King, U Hmat, who
served the last King of Burma, our family has always understood that stones from this land carry
a weight of responsibility. To take a gem from a sacred site is to invite "bad karma" - a concept
that explains the diamond's dark reputation.
The Trail of the Curse
From the moment it left the temple, a trail of misfortune followed its owners across the globe:
 The French Royalty: The gem reached King Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette.
Following the French Revolution, both were famously dethroned and beheaded.
 The American Socialite: In 1911, Evelyn Walsh McLean purchased the diamond.
Despite her immense wealth, her life was struck by tragedy, including the loss of her
children.
A Legacy of Resilience
The diamond’s journey finally reached a peaceful conclusion when famed jeweler Harry
Winston purchased it in 1947. In a surprisingly modest move, Winston sent the priceless gem to
the Smithsonian Institution wrapped in a simple paper bag.
Just as the Hope Diamond eventually found a home in the United States, our family journeyed
from the ruby mines of Mogok to the Diamond District of New York. Today, my mother
carries forward the discipline and expertise of the Ruby King's lineage, crafting jewelry that
honors the history and spirit of every stone.

this blue masterpiece, narrated by me - Kaye Lin.
